Adware
Software that displays unwanted advertisements on a device, often bundled with free programs, and that may also track browsing activity or open the door to other threats.
Adware typically arrives alongside free tools, browser extensions or pirated software. Once installed, it may flood the screen with pop-ups, change the browser's home page or search engine, or redirect users to sponsored websites. Some adware also collects information about browsing habits and sends it to third parties.
On its own, adware is often treated as a nuisance rather than a serious threat. For a business, though, it is a warning sign. It means someone was able to install unapproved software, and the same path could be used by more dangerous malware. Adware can also slow down computers, hurting staff productivity, and some malicious ad networks lead users to fake login pages or harmful downloads.
Practical tip: prevent staff from installing software or browser extensions without approval, and use endpoint protection that flags potentially unwanted programs. If a computer suddenly shows strange pop-ups or a new search engine, report it to IT rather than ignoring it.
