Restaurants and Food Service

Restaurants, cafes and food service operators in Alberta rely on point of sale, online ordering, kitchen systems and guest Wi-Fi to serve customers. HSM IT Services keeps service running, protects card payments and supports the cameras and networks behind busy locations.

Restaurant technology has become more connected and more critical. Point of sale terminals, handheld ordering devices, kitchen display systems, receipt and kitchen printers, online ordering and delivery platforms, reservation tools and scheduling apps all depend on a stable network. When the internet or POS goes down during a rush, orders stop and staff fall back on paper. Owners and managers need technology that just works and support that responds quickly during evenings and weekends.

Restaurants accept large numbers of card payments, which makes them a target for payment fraud and point of sale compromise. Payment card industry requirements apply, and the right controls depend on how payments are processed. Guest Wi-Fi is expected by customers but must be separated from payment devices and back office computers. Shared logins on POS and back office systems, along with high staff turnover, make access control a constant challenge.

Food service operators also handle employee personal information, payroll records and supplier payments, and email-based invoice fraud affects restaurants as it does any other business. Many locations use cameras to protect staff and reduce theft, which brings its own security and privacy considerations under PIPA. A consistent, managed setup across one or several locations makes it easier to open new sites, onboard staff and resolve problems quickly. It also gives owners confidence that each location meets the same security baseline.

Risks we see most

POS and payment compromise

Insecure POS systems or remote access tools can allow attackers to capture card data or disrupt payments.

Guest Wi-Fi on business networks

Customer Wi-Fi that is not separated from payment and office devices exposes those systems to anyone nearby.

Outages during service

Internet, network or POS failures during peak hours stop orders and payments immediately.

Shared logins and staff turnover

Generic accounts and slow offboarding let former staff retain access to POS, scheduling and back office systems.

Supplier invoice fraud

Fake banking change requests from suppliers or landlords can redirect regular payments.

Questions we hear

Can you help when our POS goes down on a Friday night?

Yes. Our support is available outside regular office hours, and we monitor networks and internet connections so we often know about a problem before you call. We work with your POS provider when the issue is with their system, and a backup internet connection can keep you running if your main provider has an outage.

Is free guest Wi-Fi a security risk?

It can be if guests share a network with your payment devices or office computers. We set up guest Wi-Fi on a fully separate network with its own limits, so customers can browse while your business systems remain isolated. This also supports the network segmentation expectations that apply to card payment environments.

Can you set up a new location?

Yes. We work with you before opening to plan internet, cabling, Wi-Fi, POS hardware, cameras and printers. Using a standard design based on your other locations makes setup faster, reduces surprises on opening day and makes ongoing support simpler once the doors are open.
