Banks, Credit Unions and Insurance
Credit unions, insurance brokerages and other financial institutions in Alberta protect money, personal information and customer trust under close regulatory attention. HSM IT Services provides security, support and technology risk management suited to regulated financial organizations of every size.
Financial institutions and insurance organizations run on secure, reliable technology. Branches and offices depend on banking or policy management systems, customer relationship tools, document management, telephony and secure connections to core providers and insurers. Staff work across branches, head offices and remote locations. Customers expect online access and fast service, so downtime and security incidents have an immediate effect on trust. Smaller organizations must meet high expectations with limited internal resources.
Financial organizations are prime targets for phishing, account takeover, payment fraud and ransomware. Attackers impersonate members, policyholders, executives and service providers to obtain funds or information. Insurance brokerages hold detailed personal and financial information and are attractive targets for data theft. Third-party providers, including core banking platforms, insurer portals and software vendors, form a large part of the risk picture and need to be managed carefully. Fraud attempts often combine email, phone and text messages to appear more convincing to staff.
Regulatory expectations vary by type of institution. Federally regulated financial institutions follow OSFI guidance, including Guideline B-13 on technology and cyber risk management. Alberta credit unions are provincially regulated under the Credit Union Act, and insurance intermediaries are licensed under Alberta insurance legislation. Privacy obligations apply under PIPA or PIPEDA, and anti-money laundering rules apply to many financial entities. Clear governance, documented controls, testing and incident response planning help organizations meet these expectations.
Risks we see most
Account takeover and impersonation
Attackers pose as members, clients or executives to obtain funds, change account details or access information.
Ransomware and data theft
Attacks can interrupt branch and online services and expose detailed personal and financial records.
Third-party and vendor risk
Weaknesses at core providers, software vendors or insurer platforms can affect the institution and its customers.
Phishing targeting staff
Branch, broker and back office staff are frequent targets for credential theft and fraudulent payment requests.
Gaps in governance and evidence
Controls that exist but are not documented or tested can create difficulties during regulatory reviews and audits.

Services for this sector
Virtual CISO
Our Virtual CISO gives your organization an experienced security leader on a part-time basis. We set strategy, manage risk, guide compliance with PIPA, HIA and recognized frameworks, report to leadership and boards, and make sure security spending goes where it reduces the most risk.
Learn morePenetration Testing
Our Penetration Testing uses the techniques of real attackers to safely test your networks, applications, cloud services and people. You receive a clear report that explains what we found, how it could be exploited and what to fix first, with a retest to confirm remediation.
Learn moreCompliance and Privacy (PIPA and HIA)
Our Compliance and Privacy services help Alberta organizations understand and meet their obligations under PIPA, the Health Information Act, the public-sector privacy legislation and PIPEDA. We assess your safeguards, build practical policies and map controls to frameworks such as CIS Controls v8.1, NIST CSF 2.0, ISO/IEC 27001:2022 and SOC 2.
Learn moreIncident Response
Our Incident Response helps organizations contain and recover from ransomware, business email compromise and other cyber incidents. Learn moreQuestions we hear
Does OSFI Guideline B-13 apply to us?
Guideline B-13 applies to federally regulated financial institutions such as banks and federally regulated insurers. Alberta credit unions and provincially licensed brokerages are regulated provincially, although many use B-13 and similar frameworks as a reference. We help you identify which requirements apply and map your controls to them, working alongside your compliance advisors.
Can you provide evidence for audits and examinations?
Yes. We document policies, controls, testing and remediation in a form that supports internal audit, external audit and regulatory review. Penetration test reports, vulnerability scans, training records and incident response exercises are kept organized so that you can show not only what controls exist but that they are working.
We are a small insurance brokerage. Is this overkill for us?
We scale the approach to your size. For a small brokerage, the priorities are usually multi-factor authentication, email security, secure document handling, endpoint protection, backups and staff training. These protect client information and help you answer questions from insurers and carriers, without the overhead of a large compliance program.
