XDR (Extended detection and response)

XDR is a security approach that combines and analyzes data from endpoints, email, identity, network and cloud services in one platform to detect and respond to threats more effectively.

Endpoint detection and response focuses on individual computers and servers. XDR extends that view by linking signals from multiple sources. For example, it can connect a phishing email, a suspicious sign-in to Microsoft 365 and unusual activity on a laptop into a single incident, rather than three unrelated alerts. Many XDR platforms can also take automatic actions, such as disabling an account or isolating a device.

Attacks on small businesses rarely stay in one place. They often start in email, move to user accounts and then spread to devices. XDR gives a fuller picture, which helps analysts respond faster and with more confidence. The term is used loosely by vendors, so features vary widely between products.

Practical tip: XDR still needs people watching it. For most Alberta small and mid-sized businesses, the most practical option is XDR delivered as part of a managed detection and response service. Ask which data sources are actually included in your coverage.
