SEO Poisoning and Malvertising
Criminals place fake websites high in search results or buy ads that impersonate popular software, leading people to download malware.
Layer 7: Application Medium risk
How it works
When someone searches for a common tool, such as a PDF reader, remote access client or video conferencing app, they often click the first result. Attackers take advantage of this by buying search ads or manipulating search rankings so that their lookalike sites appear at the top. The fake page often mirrors the real vendor's site closely. Paid ads appear above genuine results, and many people do not notice the small label marking them as sponsored.
The download offered is usually a genuine installer bundled with malware, so the program appears to install normally while an infostealer or remote access tool runs in the background. Malvertising can also appear on otherwise legitimate websites through ad networks. These attacks often target IT staff and power users searching for admin tools, giving criminals a privileged starting point. Because the user started the download themselves, the activity can look completely legitimate to anyone reviewing it later.
Warning signs
- Software downloaded from a search ad rather than the vendor site

- Security alerts shortly after installing new software
- Unexpected browser redirects
How to defend against it
- Install software only from approved sources or a company portal
- Remove local administrator rights from everyday accounts
- Use DNS filtering to block known malicious sites
- Deploy endpoint detection and response
- Encourage staff to bookmark trusted vendor sites
If it happens to you
- Disconnect the device and alert IT
- Uninstall and investigate, ideally by rebuilding the device
- Reset passwords used on the device
- Report the malicious site to the search engine or ad network
